Yoga Holiday with Jennifer Keegan in the foothills of Andalucia, Southern Spain

This was my first experience of a yoga holiday and also my first holiday alone. As a result I was a little nervous about joining a group of people that I hadn’t met before. But I needn’t have worried – the combination of the wonderful location, fantastic weather and great yoga practice led by Jennifer Keegan soon brought about a state of deep relaxation that made me wish that it would never end. Jennifer puts a lot of effort into finding amazing places to hold her yoga holidays. This one was held in a group of traditional hillside dwellings that have been lovingly and creatively restored by Wally and Christine. The hills and valleys are covered with olive trees and it is an incredibly peaceful place, partly due to the difficulty accessing the area.

Jennifer runs ‘Yoga Holidays’ with equal emphasis on both the yoga and the holiday elements. The yoga is Dynamic Yoga, developed by Godfrey Devereux, and takes place in the morning before the heat of the day builds up. This gentle yoga practice has something to offer at all levels, whether you are new to yoga or have been practising for some time. There is a dedicated indoor yoga space for the morning sessions and most evenings include a meditative sundown yoga session on a terrace overlooking the valley. This leaves you ready for the mouth watering evening meal that Christine apparently effortlessly dishes up for the group. The food is all home-made, partly home-grown and could be described as wholesome gourmet. Delicious fresh fruit and a variety of juices and herbal drinks are available at all times.

Afternoons are yoga-free, and were spent by my group either soaking up the sun by the pool surrounded by Wally’s beautifully landscaped gardens, or a trip to the beach a few kilometres away, or going for a walk in the surrounding countryside. We also had the opportunity for a day trip to Grenada. This was something that I enjoyed very much but I was slightly disappointed not to be able to visit the Alhambra, as I did not have the foresight to book a ticket well in advance. I have visited it since then and highly recommend it. There are also other optional trips and excursions to avail of.
