!This is the first retreat I went on with Sammi, and, not having practiced with her before,  I went with an open mind as to what I would experience. 

I must say, the experience was extremely positive.  Sammi had chosen to limit numbers to a small group (in the end we were eight students) with the result that she was able to give her attention to all of us, so we were able to get the highest benefit from the classes. She is an experienced and sensitive teacher who is able to read the energy of the group and adapt the lessons accordingly.  She was thus able to deepen and enrich my practice, introducing certain exercises that have become part of my daily routine.  I would willingly go on another retreat with her!

Insabina is a beautiful location in which to practice yoga.  Surrounded by nature, there is plenty of space to relax and just be.  A recommendation to all."

"This was my first yoga holiday and it will be hard to beat.

The venue and the teaching were both excellent. In Sabina is about an hour north of Rome by rail making it easy to reach using cheap flights from Easyjet or Ryanair and the great double-decker trains. The retreat is a stylishly updated old farmhouse close to the hill town of Torri in Sabina in the Sabine hills. It is peaceful and the tranquil atmosphere starts melting away your tensions and knots as soon as you arrive.

This is helped by the warm welcome from Giulia, the owner of In Sabina and her fantastic staff. A special mention here for their cook who provided delicious vegetarian food using many ingredients from their own orchard and vegetable plots. Mealtimes were an opportunity to chat with the others on the holiday.

Our group seemed to get along well and this made for a warm and friendly atmosphere. Heather Elton is an experienced and charismatic teacher who communicates her love and knowledge of various styles of yoga practice with clarity and generosity. There were two sessions each day; primary series ashtanga in the morning and a mixture of asanas, some meditation and pranayama in the late afternoon. Both sessions took place outdoors in the specially built yoga shala (there is an indoor shala too). Practising yoga outdoors in the warm, sweet-smelling Italian air was a pleasure and shavasana in a quiet that made one feel deaf was a new experience for a Londoner.

In between sessions there was plenty of time for lazing around the pool, or swinging in hammocks scattered throughout lovely grounds full of rustling trees. Alternatively you could book a session with their gifted on-site therapist who offered various treatments - I had a wonderful full body massage. For some evenings and the free afternoon there were various trips organised, giving us the opportunity to go walking, wine-tasting, explore the local towns or spend time in Rome. Not just a holiday but a healing and restorative experience, highly recommended."

"I attended a retreat for a week at “In Sabina” in May 2008. I have been on quite a few yoga retreats and nothing beets my experiences there. The yoga was excellent but I also knew what to expect since I knew the teacher Trine Refsbaek from previous classes. What really differs my experiences at this place from others is the perfect surroundings for the yoga. The design and details of the entire place is so well thought through and aesthetic so you feel at ease wherever you are. The outdoor yogashala with views to the Italian countryside, the beautifully designed rooms, the small private escape places on the property; it all ads to the perfect place for yoga and relaxation. Especially the yogashala stands out; it is located down a path though a small bamboo forest. It is very spacious; the views are stunning, relaxing and quiet. Walking down to the yogashala in the early morning, resting at the swimming pool surrounded by olive trees in the afternoons and watching the sundown while having dinner is what I remember with joy from my retreat at In Sabina.

A trip to the yoga retreat at In Sabina is a must-have for anyone who feels that life is skipping along that little bit too fast and you want a little ‘me time’. This Italian yoga retreat invites you to unwind in a space that is warm, welcoming and unpretentious, where the thought of saying ciao at the end of the trip is as gut wrenching as letting your Italian lover walk out of the airport departures lounge."

“Spectacular views and magical setting” are the words that greet you when you visit the website for In Sabina ( – a yoga retreat set in the grounds of a fifteenth century farmhouse in the hills outside Rome. Having spent a long weekend there, magical is the only way to describe the experience.

Divine intervention - it seemed – had entered into my world. After a hectic, and hideous, couple of months of London life the suggestion to go on an Italian yoga holiday came my way. Not taking more than a nanosecond to say yes, and Pino the driver was collecting us from Stimigliano train station after a 40-minute trip from the centre of Rome. The sun was burning through the windows of the minibus as we bumped our way through the lush and winding verdant Roman countryside. Arriving at In Sabina in a dishevelled heap of exhaustion and battered yoga bags, we were told that our first yoga class was about to begin. With no time to think of how we’d arrived and indeed why we were there, we found ourselves following our teacher down a steep and winding country path through fields before arriving at the ‘outdoor yoga deck’. This was where we were going to do yoga twice a day over the next four days. And what a place for it. A magnificent ordered space of dark wood flooring with breathtaking views of unspoilt nature. Under the burning afternoon sun, amidst the sight of a wild horse and gurgling frogs in the background, where better to salute the Roman sun?

Our teacher for the duration was our ‘guru’ from our weekly London classes, Jean Hall, who teaches at Triyoga plus others (check her out on Jean took us through our paces for 90 minutes in the morning and 90 minutes in the evening, before breakfast and the evening meal, respectively. Aside from the yoga, we hung out by the pool in the intense heat or lazed in hammocks, feeling totally relaxed and rejuvenated in very little time. The food on the retreat was all vegetarian and local fresh produce, unfussy and rustic. Activities are there if you wish to partake, including trips to nearby villages and hot spas and olive oil groves.

Words do not suffice for this fabulous retreat in true Italian style. Try it out for yourself and enjoy, but let’s just keep it between us! It’s too good to share….
